{"id":496,"date":"2023-08-17T07:31:05","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T07:31:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cch.um6p.ma\/?page_id=496"},"modified":"2023-10-02T08:59:53","modified_gmt":"2023-10-02T08:59:53","slug":"world-acclaimed-scientists-tackle-complexity-at-um6p-science-week","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/cch.um6p.ma\/?page_id=496","title":{"rendered":"World-Acclaimed Scientists Tackle \u2018Complexity at UM6P"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sara Zouiten, \u2018World-Acclaimed Scientists Tackle \u2018Complexity\u2019 at UM6P Science Week\u2019, <em>Morocco News<\/em>, Feb. 20, 2023 <br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2023\/02\/354130\/world-acclaimed-scientists-tackle-complexity-at-um6p-science-week\">https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2023\/02\/354130\/world-acclaimed-scientists-tackle-complexity-at-um6p-science-week<\/a><\/p>\n[embedyt] https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oUZkycgnA2s[\/embedyt]\n<p>Rabat &#8211; The third edition of the UM6P Science Week kicked off on Monday at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University\u2019s campus in Ben Guerir, bringing together high-caliber scientists, thinkers, and researchers from across the world.<\/p>\n<p>The event, which is taking place between February 20 and 26, features a set of conferences, musical performances, reading circles and other activities, with each participant tackling the theme of \u201ccomplexity\u201d in relation to their field of expertise.<\/p>\n<p>The UM6P Science Week \u201cplays a catalytic role in the life of the university,\u201d Moroccan professor and sociologist Reda Benkirane emphasized in an interview with Morocco World News, adding that the event offers students and participants the opportunity to exchange in a \u201cmultidisciplinary manner\u201d with \u201cthe greatest scientists of our time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The \u2018beginning of something beautiful\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Speaking at the opening of the event, UM6P President Hicham El Habti also highlighted the importance of the university\u2019s science week, saying it aligns with the&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2021\/10\/344858\/um6p-the-intellectual-front-of-moroccos-commitment-to-africa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UM6P\u2019s vision<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;to promote applied scientific research.<\/p>\n<p>El Habti hopes that the event would be \u201cthe beginning of something beautiful,\u201d and contribute to creating a \u201cmore realistic impact.\u201d In this regard, he called on the participants and UM6P students to seize the opportunity and benefit from the expertise and knowledge of the participating scientists. \u201cDare to explore,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Explaining the reasoning behind this edition\u2019s theme, Moroccan academic and writer Fouad Laroui emphasized that complexity is \u201ccommon in all domains\u201d and is present in the entirety of the human experience.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/ecf8bc48a59fd6e7791b03a4e06489f4-800x465.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Moroccan academic Fouad Laroui speaking at the event<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Benkirane, who is also the Chair of Complexities and Humanities at the Africa Business School, echoed Laroui\u2019s statement, emphasizing the relevance and presence of complexity in all components of humanity. \u201cComplexity is all around us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, Benkirane warned that the complexity in play could have a reverse impact in the future, in a \u201cbutterfly effect\u201d fashion. \u201cComplexity is somehow taking revenge on us,\u201d he said, highlighting the many crises and challenges that humanity has faced over the past decades, from 9\/11 to the covid-19 pandemic. \u201cWe are living in a dark age of complexity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Under the theme of \u201cComplexity, Golden Age, Dark Age,\u201d Benkirane\u2019s presentation indicated that regardless of its future impact, which could be better or worse, complexity will undoubtedly be more \u201camplified and generalized .\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/b2e5fb472974f6ca71f82211274061fc-800x465.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Chair of Complexities and Humanities at the Africa Business School Reda Benkirane<\/em><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Complexity in Times of Crisis<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Like Benkirane, French philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin, spoke about the \u201cchallenges of complexity in times of crisis.\u201d The well-respected 101-year-old social scientist has witnessed some of humanity\u2019s biggest crises, challenges, and prominent events, including his participation in World War II.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne cannot understand a system, unless one understands the properties of all its components,\u201d Morin emphasized, explaining that life does not follow a linear order. The French sociologist also highlighted the complexity of the relations that govern people and institutions, saying that \u201cany autonomy is also dependency.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several unexpected scenarios unfold in times of uncertainty and interlinked crises, Mourin noted, explaining that difficult times can prompt creativity and innovative solutions, as well as have severe repercussions and trigger other crises.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/e1511a55ec8516de0cdae2834ed87ac1-800x465.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>French philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Talking about the crises that have engulfed the world in recent decades, Mourin said that they tend to pile up and come one after the other. He gave the example of the COVID-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, and the effect they have had on globalization. Describing it as \u201cthe crisis of globalization,\u201d he said that the ongoing war has created obstacles in the face of the years-long efforts to unite the world.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the complexity of the COVID-19 crisis provoked several social, domestic, and economic crises, such as the gas and energy crisis and food insecurity in Africa. \u201cThe crisis happened during a time when the planet was in crisis,\u201d he said in reference to the challenges that currently face humanity, such as climate change, which has aggravated in light of the current global context.<\/p>\n<p>Morin drew attention to the difficult dilemma humans are bound to encounter as they grapple with these successive crises that are happening simultaneously and are affecting several domains. \u201cThis is humanity in 2023 \u2026 encountering crises that are inflating one another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read also:&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2019\/09\/283384\/climate-change-geopolitics-enlightened-catastrophism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Panel&#8217;s Fun Foray Into the Tragic Geopolitics of Climate Change&nbsp;<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cHumanity has no way of managing them [the challenges],\u201d the French scientist said, stressing that \u201cno entity can manage this crisis.\u201d He argued that \u201cwar creates illusion and hatred,\u201d encouraging people to promote and engage in a globalization that is based on \u201csolidarity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since all humans are affected by these crises, they must come together in pursuit of collective action, he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Stephen Wolfram, a British-American scientist and CEO of Wolfram Research, spoke of the \u201cfoundation and implications of complexity.\u201d He discussed his concept of the \u201cRuliad,\u201d which is \u201cthe result of following all possible computational rules in all possible ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/d20f96405e784564e704b4fd7fdfd24a-800x465.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>British-American scientist Stephen Wolfram<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Explaining the complexity of the universe, Wolfram said that \u201cthe behavior could be simple, but the result we get from it is complex.\u201d \u201cThe universe is running by all possible rules,\u201d he added, explaining that it is difficult to pinpoint the very structure that governs the world.<\/p>\n<p>Wolfram gave the example of ChatGPT &#8211; an Artificial Intelligence powered chatbot &#8211; during his presentation, saying that the AI-powered tool is capable of generating human-like language by implicitly learning the syntactic grammar of English.<\/p>\n<p>While many think that a complex process comes into play to produce ChatGPT&#8217;s human-like language, the English-American scientist said that it simply uses the humans&#8217; repeated structure of meaning and generalization of logic.<\/p>\n<p>Other participants at the event include French philosopher, sociologist, and professor Raphael Liogier, who told Morocco World News about the goal he aims to achieve through his participation in the UM6P Science Week. He said he seeks to fight against two widely spread prejudices.<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/c274140d3e14d5c8a2c55358ca9d3194-800x465.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>French professor and sociologist Raphael Liogier<\/em><\/p>\n<p>One of those prejudices is the belief that human beings&#8217; intelligence and conscience are the result of their complexity, Liogier explained.<\/p>\n<p>The other prejudice Liogier aims to debunk is humans\u2019 belief that they are more complex than other animals. For him, humans are in fact \u201ccomplexed\u201d animals that seek to compensate for their fragility and weakness. He told MWN: \u201cWe are complexed before we are complex.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, President of the Makassed University of Beirut Hassan Ghaziri will tackle the way the \u201cnotion of complexity is transforming the engineering areas,\u201d as well as its role in finding new ways to solve our current issues, he told Morocco World News.<\/p>\n<div id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-154\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>Ghaziri, who is also a professor of machine learning, argued that engineers are the \u201cagent of transformation\u201d in our current world, explaining that at this moment the world faces \u201cdeep crises\u201d due to new technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n<div id=\"ezoic-pub-ad-placeholder-156\">&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid\" src=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/62d437cf35578c5cf993392583faea8c-800x465.jpeg\"><\/p>\n<p><em>Professor of machine learning and President of the Makassed University of Beirut Hassan Ghaziri<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"article_copyright\">\u00a9 Morocco World News.
